“The Way I Am" is the sixth single released from Charlie’s sophomore album VoiceNotes. The song was confirmed as the next single in an Instagram post dated July 6th, 2018. On March 17, 2018, Puth announced the song title in an interview on Beats 1. On April 23, 2018, Charlie Puth teased the song on Instagram with a cryptic comment under his photo, saying “and now… this is the way I am. ” On May 11, 2018, Puth talked about the record on the Zach Sang Show and what it meant for him both personally and artistically, saying When See You Again was out and I was trying to figure out who I was musically and I was putting all these songs out and they didn’t really sound like each other and I was trying to be someone that I wasn’t. Even outside of music I thought Oh, I’m a pop singer. I have to act a certain way, I have to talk a certain way.’ I fell victim to that and I always told myself that if success ever hit me, that would not happen to me but that exact same thing, probably 10 times more, had happened to me. The Way I Am starts off the album with the self-realisation that I don’t need to go out every night, I don’t need to surround myself with yes-men/women’, I can just be around my family and people that I’m close to. I’m not inventing this lingo, this is just stuff that people need to realise in their own lives as well so I really was very passionate about the album starting off with that lyrical sentiment.
